Customizing Your Text

Once you’ve added text to your project, customize it with additional styling that matches the aesthetic of your project. These text options are available in the Photo Editor, Graphic Designer, or Collage Maker.

Step 1: Open a project with a text layer or add a text layer to the project on your canvas.

Step 2: Select the text layer you'd like to customize. The Text Properties panel will appear on the left side of the editor.

Step 3: Choose a Font. You can select from BeFunky’s font library, add your own fonts, or import Google Fonts using the  Font Manager.

Step 4: Change the Font Color. Change the Font Color by clicking the color swatch next to the font size. This opens the Color Picker, where you can select a new color, enter a hex code, or use the eyedropper tool.

Step 5: Change the Font Size. You have a couple of ways to adjust the Font Size, you can use the Font Size box to enter a new size or you can use the on-canvas controls to drag the text box to resize the font.

Step 6: Apply more styling options from the Text Properties panel:

  • Styling - Make your text BoldItalicized, or underlined.
  • Spacing - Adjust letter spacing and line height to control the space between characters and lines.
  • Alignment - Set your text to Align Right, Center, Left, or Justify. This aligns the text within the text box.
  • Blend Modes - Changing the blending mode changes how your text interacts with layers underneath it for unique effects.
  • Opacity - Adjusts the level of transparency for your text layer.

Step 7: Add some artistic flair to the text layer with Background, Highlight, Outline, Drop Shadow, Glow, or Curved Text. Each option has its own set of controls for detailed customization:

Pro Tip: Background, Outline, and Highlight also have an Intensity slider in the color picker, which lets you change the strength of the color you're applying.

  • Background: Adds a colored background to your text layer. You can change the color and adjust the size of the padding.
  • Highlight: Adds a colored background to the text layer.
  • Curved Text: Give your text layer a subtle arc or take it all the way to a full circle with our curved text tool.

  • Outline: Creates a border around each letter to make your text stand out. There are two ways to apply an outline:
    • Use the Outline checkbox in the Text Properties panel for a quick and simple outline.
    • Use the Outline option from the Shadow/Glow dropdown for more advanced outline effects.
If you want to combine multiple effects like outline + drop shadow, or even outline + outline. We recommend using the checkbox version for the first outline, then layering an additional one through the Shadow/Glow menu.

Understanding Shadow/Glow Menu Options

When using drop shadows, glows, or outlines, the Shadow/Glow menu will show the most recently applied effect. Here’s a quick breakdown of the available options:

  • Drop Shadow: Adds dimension to your text with a customizable shadow. For more detailed instructions, check out our Drop Shadow tutorial.
  • Glow – Creates a soft, diffused highlight around your layer. For more detailed instructions, check out our tutorial on how to add a Glow Effect on Text.
  • Outline – Adds a line around the shape or edge of your layer.
  • Last Modified – Applies the most recent non-default setting to newly selected layers.
  • Custom – Indicates the layer was edited with custom settings prior to applying a Last Modified preset.
