How to Create a Custom Sky With Image Generator

BeFunky's Sky Replacer makes it easy to replace the existing sky in a photo with something new. With Image Generator, you can create a custom AI-generated sky directly from Sky Replacer and apply it to your photo without leaving your project.

This workflow is useful when you want a replacement sky created specifically for your image, such as a bright blue sky, dramatic sunset, cloudy atmosphere, or other custom scene. After generating your new sky, you can adjust its color, position, size, blur, edge settings, and foreground to help it blend naturally with your photo.

Sky Replacer is available to BeFunky subscribers. View BeFunky subscription options.

Open Your Image in Sky Replacer

Step 1: Open a photo with a visible sky in the Photo Editor, then select Sky Replacer from the Edit section of the left-hand menu.

BeFunky will automatically detect the sky and separate it from the foreground. Photos with a clearly visible sky and defined horizon typically produce the best results.

Adjust the Sky Selection

Step 2: If too much or too little of the sky was selected, open Adjust Selection. By default, Show/Hide Mask is enabled and applies a green overlay to the areas of the image being retained.

Select Keep or Remove depending on the area you want to adjust. Customize the brush settings, then paint over the areas that need additional refinement.

  • Keep: Restores areas of the image that should remain visible.
  • Remove: Removes additional areas from the sky selection.
  • Reset: Returns the selection to the original Sky Replacer result.

Open Image Generator From Sky Replacer

Step 3: Select Change Sky.

Step 4: Select Images, then choose Select Sky.

Step 5: Select Image Generator to create a custom AI-generated image to use as your replacement sky.

Create an AI-Generated Sky

Step 6: Enter a prompt describing the sky you want to create. Your prompt can contain up to 1,000 characters, and you can also copy and paste text directly into the prompt box.

Focus your prompt on the sky itself. Include details such as:

  • Time of day
  • Cloud type or weather
  • Colors
  • Lighting
  • Mood or atmosphere
  • Photographic or artistic style

Example Prompt:

A dramatic sunset sky with soft layered clouds, warm orange and pink light near the horizon, fading into deep blue overhead, with a realistic photographic look.

Pro Tip: Describe the sky you want to create rather than describing the foreground of your original photo. This helps Image Generator focus on creating the replacement sky that will appear behind your foreground.

Step 7: Choose an Aspect ratio that best matches the shape and composition of your original image.

Pro Tip: If you choose an aspect ratio that is different from your original image, only a portion of the generated sky may initially be visible.

Step 8: Select Generate.

Your generated sky will appear in the preview and will automatically be saved under Image Generations in your Image Library.

Important Note: A rejected or unsafe prompt does not create or save an image.

Step 9: Select Use this Image to add the generated image to your available sky options. You'll return to the Select Sky screen, where you can apply the generated sky and continue editing it.

Create Additional Sky Options

To create another sky, select Image Generator again. Adjust Variation, revise your prompt, or choose another aspect ratio, then repeat Steps 6–9.

Pro Tip: Make all intended changes to your prompt, aspect ratio, and variation before selecting Generate. Each newly generated image uses 5 credits. Generating a separate image after each adjustment will use additional credits.

View and Use Previous Image Generations

Step 10: Select Image Generations to view skies and other images you've already generated.

To use a single image, select the image and choose Use this Image. You'll return to the Select Sky screen with the generated image added to your available sky options.

To add multiple generated images, select Select, choose the images you want to add, then select Use [number] Images. The number shown on the button will update based on the number of images you've selected.

Select an image again to deselect it, or choose Cancel Select to clear the entire selection.

Important Note: Viewing, selecting, or reusing an existing image from Image Generations does not use additional credits. Credits are only used when you select Generate and a new image is created.

Edit the Generated Sky

Step 11: After selecting your generated sky, open Edit Sky to adjust how it blends with your original photo.

  • Colors: Adjust saturation, temperature, and other color settings. You can also adjust the lighting along the edge to help the new sky blend more naturally with the foreground.
  • Adjust: Change the edge and edge hardness, size, position, and blur of the generated sky. You can also use the color-matching controls to help blend the replacement sky with the original photo.
  • Position: Click and drag the generated sky directly on the canvas to reposition it.

Pro Tip: Adjusting the color temperature, brightness, position, and blur of your generated sky can help it better match the lighting and perspective of the original photo.

Edit the Foreground

Step 12: Return to the main Sky Replacer menu and select Edit Foreground if you need to adjust the foreground to better match your new sky.

Use the available color and lighting adjustments to help the foreground and generated sky look more consistent with one another.

Apply Your New Sky

Step 13: When you're happy with your generated sky and any adjustments you've made, select Apply.

You can continue editing your image in the Photo Editor or save your project.
