How to Create a Custom Background With Image Generator

BeFunky's Background Remover makes it easy to remove an existing photo background and replace it with something new. With Image Generator, you can create a custom AI-generated background directly within Background Remover and apply it behind your original subject without leaving your project.

This workflow is useful for creating custom backgrounds for product photos, portraits, social media images, and other creative projects. After generating your new background, you can adjust its position, color, blur, scale, and other settings to help it blend naturally with your subject.

Background Remover is available to BeFunky subscribers. View BeFunky subscription options.

Remove the Existing Background

Step 1: Open your image in Background Remover. BeFunky will automatically detect your subject and remove the existing background, leaving a transparent background behind it.

Pro Tip: Click and drag your subject to reposition it on the canvas.

Adjust the Background Selection

Step 2: If too much or too little of your image was removed, open Adjust Selection. By default, Show/Hide Mask is enabled and applies a green overlay to the areas of the image being retained.

Select Keep or Remove depending on the area you want to adjust. Customize the brush settings, then paint over the areas that need additional refinement.

  • Keep: Restores areas of the image that should remain visible.
  • Remove: Erases additional areas from the background or selection.
  • Reset: Returns the selection to the original Background Remover result.

Open Image Generator From Background Remover

Step 3: Open Change Background.

Step 4: Select Image, then choose Select Background.

Step 5: Select Image Generator to create a custom AI-generated image to use as the new background behind your subject.

Create an AI-Generated Background

Step 6: Enter a prompt describing the background you want to create. Your prompt can contain up to 1,000 characters, and you can also copy and paste text directly into the prompt box.

Focus your prompt on the environment or setting you want to appear behind your existing subject. Include details such as:

  • Location or setting
  • Colors
  • Lighting
  • Time of day
  • Mood or atmosphere
  • Visual or photographic style

Example Prompt:

A sunlit Mediterranean courtyard with pale stone walls, climbing bougainvillea, warm terracotta tiles, soft natural afternoon light, and a bright, photorealistic look.

Pro Tip: Describe the background you want to create for your current subject rather than describing your original subject again. This helps Image Generator focus on creating the new environment that will appear behind your subject.

Step 7: Choose an Aspect ratio that best matches the shape and composition of your original image.

Pro Tip: If you choose an aspect ratio that is different from your original image, only a portion of the generated background may initially be visible. You can reposition and scale the background after applying it.

Step 8: Select Generate.

Your generated background will appear in the preview and will automatically be saved under Image Generations in your Image Library.

Important Note: A rejected or unsafe prompt does not create or save an image.

Step 9: Select Use this Image to add the generated image to your available backgrounds. You'll return to the Select Background screen, where you can continue editing or apply the background behind your subject.

Create Additional Background Options

To create another background, select Image Generator again. Adjust Variation, revise your prompt, or choose another aspect ratio, then repeat Steps 6–9.

Pro Tip: Make all intended changes to your prompt, aspect ratio, and variation before selecting Generate. Each newly generated image uses 5 credits. Generating a separate image after each adjustment will use additional credits.

View and Use Previous Image Generations

Step 10: Select Image Generations to view backgrounds and other images you've already generated.

To use a single image, select the image and choose Use this Image. You'll return to the Select Background screen with the generated image added to your available background options.

To add multiple generated images, select Select, choose the images you want to add, then select Use [number] Images. The number shown on the button will update based on the number of images you've selected.

Select an image again to deselect it, or choose Cancel Select to clear the entire selection.

Important Note: Viewing, selecting, or reusing an existing image from Image Generations does not use additional credits. Credits are only used when you select Generate and a new image is created.

Edit the Generated Background

Step 11: After choosing your generated background, select the Edit Background icon on its thumbnail in the Select Background screen.

While you're in this menu, clicking and dragging on the canvas will reposition the background rather than the subject.

  • Blur: Adjust the background blur to help it better match the depth of field of your original photo.
  • Scale: Zoom the generated background in or out.
  • Position: Click and drag the generated background to reposition it behind your subject.
  • Flip: Flip the background horizontally.
  • Colors: Adjust luminosity, contrast, saturation, and temperature to help the generated background better match your subject.

Pro Tip: Matching the lighting, color temperature, and blur of the generated background to your subject can help create a more natural-looking result.

Add a Drop Shadow

If needed, use Drop Shadow to add depth between your subject and the generated background and help the subject blend more naturally into the new setting.

  • When you open Drop Shadow, a default shadow is automatically applied to the subject.
  • Adjust Distance, Angle, Blur, Size, Density, and Opacity.
  • Select the Color box to choose a different shadow color.
  • Uncheck Enable Drop Shadow to remove the shadow.

Apply Your New Background

Step 12: When you're happy with your generated background and any adjustments you've made, select Apply.

You can continue editing your image in the Photo Editor or save your finished project.
