Using the Detach Subject Tool

Effortlessly move, rotate, and resize your subject while keeping the original background of your image. With Detach Subject, you instantly separate the image into two separate layers. With AI generative fill, the background behind your subject is filled in so you can put your subject exactly where you want it. You can find the Detach Subject tool in the Remove/Replace section of the Photo Editor.

This tool is only available for BeFunky Plus subscribers. Upgrade your subscription here!

Step 1: Open your photo in BeFunky’s Photo Editor and select Detach Subject in the  Remove/Replace section of the Edit menu.

Step 2: A selection box will appear around the subject. Move, resize, or rotate the subject layer as needed.

Step 3: Adjust Selection (optional) - If too much or too little of the subject has been removed, select the Adjust Subject menu. By default, the Show/Hide Mask option will be selected. This applies a green tint on the areas of the image that are being retained. Uncheck the Show/Hide Mask box if you do not wish to see the mask overlaying your selection. Select the Keep or Remove button based on your needs.

Adjust the brush settings and paint over the areas that need additional touch-ups. Keep will retain the parts of the image you select, while Remove will erase selections from your new image. Use the reset button to reset the image to the original subject layer.

Pro Tip: If you need to reset the subject layer back to the original position, right-click and select 'Reset'.

Step 4: Background Variation (optional). Select an option (1-5) that best fills in the background for your image.

Pro Tip:  If the Background Variation generates an unwanted object, you can use the Object Eraser to touch up the area.

Step 5: By default, the 'Keep Layers Separate' option will be selected with the checked box. This option will keep the subject layer separate from the background after you Apply. That way, you can continue to make changes and additional edits to each layer independently. It will also add a copy of the subject to the Image Manager.

Uncheck the box to deselect this option. This will flatten the subject to the background when applying the edit. A copy of the subject image will not appear in the Image Manager.

Step  6: Click Apply to save your changes.

Step 7: Continue adding to and editing your creation. If you're done, be sure to save your project!
