Text can make a big impact on the tone and polish of your design. With BeFunky’s tools, you can easily align and space your text for a clean, professional layout—no need to manually move layers into place. This guide covers how to use alignment tools and spacing options in the Text Properties and Options menus, as well as directly on the canvas.
Text Alignment in the Text Properties Menu
You can resize the text box or use the space bar to manually add space, but for more precise formatting, use the alignment options in the Text Properties panel. These tools align text within the boundaries of the text box:
- Align Left – Aligns text to the left side of the text box.
- Align Center – Centers text within the text box.
- Align Right – Aligns text to the right side of the text box.
- Justify – Distributes text evenly across the width of the text box by adjusting spacing between words.
If your text box is tightly fitted to your text, these alignment changes may not appear as dramatic.
Adjusting Text Spacing
You can fine-tune the appearance of your text using the following spacing controls in the Text Properties panel:
Letter Spacing: Use the slider to increase or decrease the amount of space between individual characters. The text box will automatically expand to fit the new spacing, and text will wrap to the next line as needed.
Line Height: Adjust the vertical space between lines of text using the slider. Move the slider left to reduce spacing or right to increase it, depending on the look you want to achieve.
Pro Tip: Use increased letter spacing and line height for minimalist or modern designs. For compact layouts, decrease spacing to fit more text without sacrificing readability.
Using the Options Menu
The Options menu gives you additional control over your text elements, including:
- Opacity – Adjust the transparency of your text layer.
- Blend Mode – Change how your text interacts with the background.
- Flip – Flip the text layer horizontally or vertically.
- Layer Order – Move the text layer forward or backward among other layers.
This menu also includes a set of alignment tools that align your text relative to the canvas—not just within the text box. These canvas alignment tools position your text layer based on its edges or center points:
Horizontal alignment
- Align Left – Aligns the left edge of the text to the left side of the canvas.
- Align Center – Centers the text horizontally on the canvas.
- Align Right – Aligns the right edge of the text to the right side of the canvas.
Vertical alignment
- Align Top – Aligns the top edge of the text to the top of the canvas.
- Align Middle – Centers the text vertically on the canvas.
- Align Bottom – Aligns the bottom edge of the text to the bottom of the canvas.
When working with groups of layers, the outermost edge of the group will align to the canvas, and all other layers will move in tandem.
Important Note: If you double-click an alignment button while working with grouped layers, each layer will individually align to the canvas. This may cause overlapping depending on your selection.
Using the On-Canvas Alignment Menu
The on-canvas context menu provides a fast way to align your text directly from the workspace. It works the same way as the Options menu.
Step 1: Select your desired layers.
Step 2: Click on the selected text layer to open the on-canvas context menu.
Step 3: Hover over the alignment icon and choose your preferred alignment option.
Step 4: Continue editing your design, and don’t forget to save your project when you're done!
