How To Use Layers & Groups
Whether you’re in the Photo Editor, Graphic Designer, or Collage Maker, you can use the Layers & Groups feature to organize groups of layers for editing.
The term “Layers” refers to items such as images, graphics, text, and basically any moveable item that can be layered on top of a photo, design, or collage. The term “Groups” refers to any layer items that you’ve selected as a group for editing. Here’s how it works:
Step 1 - Either Click + Drag with your mouse over the layer items you want to select, or hold down the Command key on your keyboard while you click on each item. You’ll see each one become highlighted, with a blue dashed box around the group of items you’ve selected.
Step 2 - Right click on your group of items and select Create Group from the menu options. You can then type a name for your group into the Group Name box that appears.
Step 3 - Repeat the process of selecting items, creating a new group, and naming the group as many times as you’d like.
Step 4 - When you’re finished creating your groups, click the Layers & Groups button in the bottom left corner of the screen (looks like a stack of papers).
Step 5 - Under the Layers tab, you will be able to see and select every single layer item within your photo, collage, or design. By clicking on each layer, you will see it become highlighted on your canvas, with a blue dashed box around it. When a layer is highlighted, you can drag the blue circles around the edges of the dashed box to resize it individually. You can also drag the taller blue circle to rotate the item, or use the respective properties menu to make custom changes.
Right clicking on a layer while it’s highlighted lets you choose additional options for customizing the layer, such as duplicating, aligning, flipping, moving forward or backward between other layers, and deleting the layer altogether.
Step 6 - Under the Groups tab within Layers & Groups, you’ll be able to see and select every single group you’ve created. When a group is selected, it will become highlighted, with a blue dashed box around every item within the group. You can drag the blue circles around the dashed box to resize the items as a group, or drag the taller blue circle to rotate the items as a group.
Right clicking on a group while it’s highlighted lets you choose additional options for customizing items as a group, such as re-aligning, moving backwards and forwards between other layers, removing certain items from the group, and deleting the group altogether.
Step 7 - To ungroup items that you’ve saved as a group, click on the trash icon next to the group name in the Layers & Groups menu.
