Controlling Exposure with Dodge and Burn

Create the right balance and impact with your images by adjusting the light details of your image.  Dodge and Burn not only allows you to independently control the exposure and contrast between your shadows and highlights, but you can also edit your midtones.  Dodging and burning are a great way to refine your exposure details and fix uneven tones.  Follow along on how to craft and curate the lighting and exposure on your images.

Step 1: Open your photo in BeFunky’s Photo Editor and select Dodge/Burn in the  Brightness section of the Edit menu.

Step 2: Select either Dodge or Burn.

  • Dodge - Brighten the tone of the image.
  • Burn - Darken the tone of the image.

Step 3: Select the tone range that you would like to edit.

  • Shadows - The darker tones of the image.
  • Midtones - The region of tones that fall between the darkest shadows and brightest highlights of the image.
  • Highlights- The brightest tones of the image.

Pro Tip: Select the letter 'O' key to quickly check between the edit and the original image.

Step 4:  Adjust the brush settings by dragging the sliders or inputting the number amount. Paint over the areas you would like to edit by selecting and dragging the cursor. Start at a lower brush strength and gradually increase as needed.  Each pass with the brush is a buildable layer.

Pro Tip: If you're painting over an area and find that no additional edits are appearing,  check the brush strength or your tone range, as you may have adjusted the exposure enough that you are in another tone range or need more strength.

Step 5: If you over-apply an edit, you can use the Erase button, and then adjust your brush settings and paint over those areas. When you select the Erase button, a Reset button will appear where the tone range options are.  The Reset button resets the entire image and all tones back to the image's last saved state, removing all applied Dodge/Burn edits.

Step 6: Repeat steps 4 and 5 as needed for different tone ranges.

Step 7:  Click Apply to save your changes.

Step 8: Continue adding to and editing your creation. If you're done, be sure to save your project!
